ABOUT:

We often think of fire as something to control and shape, but the truth is that fire has shaped us as human beings over the past million years of our existence as much as we have shaped it. Although our relationship to fire has shifted in the modern era where heat, electricity, and gas are readily at hand, our deep embodied connection to this ancient ally hasn't disappeared. Simply feel what happens in your body when you sit down around a fire with a group of humans to eat, sing or tell stories, and this fact becomes inescapably obvious.

This one-day Spirit of Fire workshop is an opportunity to deepen your connection with fire, grow your confidence in building and tending fires, and learn more about how fire has shaped our species through time. We will cover:

  • General principles of fire-building and tending, including safety considerations

  • Basic friction fire methods, including bow drill and hand drill

  • Emergency fire-making, including fire kits and building fires with wild materials

  • Open-fire cooking methods - achieving deliciousness with minimal ingredients

  • The history, symbolism, and cultural significance of humanity's relationship with fire

We will begin the day with an introduction to the history of fire and quickly move toward practical skills: different fire starting methods, fire-making principles and safety, and emergency fires. We will then put these skills to use in the afternoon/evening with a open fire cookout, and explore the deeper layers of our relationship with this mysterious and powerful being.
